They may not have found the film particularly uplifting, but were certainly challenged to do a lot of thinking during the two hours they watched it. The film makes little headway against a poor script and the foolish central casting of Wayne as a German without resolving the problem of accent. She is a German agent who has been forced into espionage by the Nazis. There's no appearances of the Greek Gods - Zeus, Poseidon or Hades throughout the film. Wayne fills the screen like no man could. She is played in full glamour girl mode by Lana Turner, who, despite the depredations of the journey, is always immaculately dressed, made up and coiffed. His ship--an old, rusty 5,000 ton freighter named the Ergenstrasse--is being pursued by a British warship on his journey from Australia back to Germany.
This is one slow-paced and uneventful chase. He appeared in dozens of westerns on the big screen and on television. Sure, there is the final showdown when the British finally catch up to him but by then you will have probably lost interest enough to not even care. But he keeps quiet about it at the behest of the German consul assigned to Valparaiso and allows his men to be feted at a banquet in their honor while he quietly slips away to see Elsa. The mid 1950s were all about widescreen and Technicolor to lure couch potatoes away from their tv sets and out to the movies. Occasionally we see a British destroyer, supposedly looking for Wayne, but they never actually encounter each other. Ehrlich, an anti-Nazi but proud German, hopes to outrun or out-maneuver the British warship pursuing him. I know this is really late. Arness would go on to star in television's long running western Gunsmoke.
Finally got to see The Sea Chase last night. The ocean made for a great visual background for the new wider screen. The movie is called The Sea Chase, but unfortunately, there is very little chasing going on. As for the gay angle with Tab Hunter's character, it certainly fits, even if it wasn't intentional. Most of the plot elements felt contrived or questionable. She then headed for the subantarctic Auckland Islands where she successfully evaded two British naval craft searching for her and re-stocked with food and wood cutting down large swathes of the southern rata forest. Yeah, this movie certainly doesn't live up to its title.
