Some people have gotten stuck at the classpnp. On the General tab, click Selective Startup. The desktop icons can have the selection effect when you mouse over it, just that you cannot execute the program. They tend to be a bit problematic these days. Windows 7 does a much better job of handling its own optimization than its predecessors did. Again, this may not at all be relevant, but you're noticing a pattern here that my machine's registry is getting tweaked all of the time. As far as I can tell, there have been no updates come through recently - the last block of Windows updates came through. You basically have to manually figure it out by re-enabling half the startup items and then restarting. It might also help you take precautions that can avoid the experience. I've heard that it's something to do with drivers.
The last options I have is to reinstall the Ethernet driver but I am not entirely sure if its worth the time to do so. No data is shared with Facebook unless you engage with this feature. I got stuck on the Welcome screen several times, and got bailed out repeating the same process. I can boot into Safe mode without any trouble. I thought there could be a faulty cable or connection, so I Shut Down the computer to investigate. They tried it on their home network last night and it worked normally, but when they connect to our corporate network, it hangs unles we go into safe mode, disable the network adapters, boot, log in and re-enable those adapters. I had no option other than to do a hard re-boot starting my computer from safe mode.
